Biography

Jacob McCoy (b. 27 October 1999, Flower Mound, Tx.) is an American college student and composer.

Mr. McCoy is currently [2023] a graduate student in music composition at University of North Carolina School of the Arts working with Dr. Jared Miller. He received his bachelor's in music composition at Oklahoma City University in 2022, studying composition with Dr. Edward Knight.

Having studied piano, voice, and viola throughout his education, McCoy leans heavily on his classical roots to find new sounds and tell heart wrenching stories with his music. His artistic voice is rooted in textures and colors influenced by his love of musical theater, film music, and classical music. He seeks to pave a new way for film and concert music, writing pieces with polyrhythms, unique textures, and strong melodic throughlines that fall easy on the ears. Most of his works are either stories or character studies; he considers himself a musical storyteller.

Mr. McCoy has written for numerous ensembles, genres, and mediums. His love for musical theater, film music, and classical music have led to a diverse body of work ranging from solos to orchestral poems, classical to postmodern, acoustic to electronic.
