Program Notes

The Minstrel Boy is an Irish patriotic tune written by Thomas Moore. Based on the melody of the old Irish air The Moreen, Moore's song was written for friends who were killed during the 1798 rebellion of the United Irishmen. It became a favorite song of the Irish who fought in the United States Civil War and World War I.

Although The Girl I Left Behind Me is perhaps most associated as a march played by British and American military bands, it is actually an old Irish dance tune originally known as The Rambling Labourer and The Spailpin Fanach.
