Program Notes

This popular piece was commissioned and premiered (1981) by the New Mexico State University Wind Ensemble. One of four "primitive" works, Invocation and Toccata followed Vision Macabre (1978) and preceded Torch Dance (1984) and Pagan Dances (1987). This dramatic score combines repeated rhythms, massive polyharmonies and stark contrasts in color and dynamics. It also makes use of five-note thematic ideas, five-note chords, five-count bars, and five-bar phrases.
