Program Notes
Invention No. 1 is designed to employ all the winds in a melodic role. Its intent is to harness the vigor of young instrumentalists into a musical awareness of phrasing, imitation and colour. Its further purpose is to illustrate various techniques of canon or imitation.
- Program Note from score
After the flute introduces the initial theme, it is picked up by the trumpets and embellished by the french horns. The melody is strengthened by the addition of alto saxophones and trombones, and the clarinets, low woodwinds and brass provide the harmonies. The secondary theme is introduced again by the flute in single motifs, but quickly transforms into a canon, as each section echoes the thematic material. Once the motifs have been established, they are combined to create a full-blown canon, with a great deal of fire tapering off to a quiet whisper, where a clarinet choir performs the theme as a chorale. The brass choir performs the melody in a full rich fashion as the rest of the ensemble establishes an energetic rhythm underneath. As the chorale finishes the saxophone choir picks up the original theme and starts the process of canon one last time. The piece finishes with the entire ensemble stating the initial theme in a very dramatic flourish.
