Program Notes
Into Twilight was commissioned by Houghton College for the 10/1/2021 inauguration of President Wayne Lewis, sixth president of Houghton College.
The composer writes:
Twilight has always been a time that captivates me – the soft glow of light from the sun below the horizon and the often-stunning display of colors in the sky. I’m also intrigued by the liminal nature of twilight in that it’s neither day nor night, but has qualities of each. Into Twilight was originally conceived of during a week-long residency in 2019 with the Interlochen Academy Wind Symphony. During my residency in Interlochen, Michigan, I spent each evening at twilight walking on a frozen lake and admiring the outrageously beautiful display of colors, clouds, sky, moon, and stars. In the silence of these evenings, the main melodic material and affect of Into Twilight was born.
