Program Notes

The title of this engaging work aptly describes its structure. With themes that use perfect fourths and fifths, the interaction of these motives between woodwinds and brass is evident throughout the piece. A fanfare-like opening introduces a faster main section that features driving rhythms and bold melodic material stated initially by trumpets and horns. Upper woodwinds are then given melodic responsibilities before a lush melody emerges in the horn section. A slow, contrasting middle section with solos for oboe and trumpet builds to a dramatic climax before revisiting earlier material. A loud Presto section brings the piece to a powerful conclusion.
