Program Notes
Gustav Holst's band masterwork is now available in an edition that places it within reach of bands with severely limited or awkward instrumentation. It will make small bands with good players sound great. Optional parts for guitar, piano, bass and percussion can also fill some missing holes in the band.
- Program Note from publisher
The Intermezzo is light and brisk and features soloistic passages for the cornet, oboe and clarinet. Holst prominently displays the agility and sensitivity of the wind band through transparent textures and passages where the melody and accompaniment are woven into a variety of instrumental settings.
- Program Note by Esmail Khalili
Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat is universally considered a band masterwork. This Build-A-Band edition places it within reach of those bands with limited or unbalanced instrumentation, making it the perfect selection for the small band with good players to sound great. This fast middle movement from the suite teaches young musicians to articulate contrasting staccato and legato passages. Optional parts for guitar, piano, bass and percussion can fill some missing holes in the band.
