Program Notes

Infinite Horizons was commissioned by the Alpha Omicron chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at Texas Tech University. It was premiered by James Sudduth and the Tech Symphonic Band in Lubbock on February 3, 1991. The work is dedicated to Dean Killion, director of band at Texas Tech from 1959 to 1980.

The title reflects the composer's boyhood recollections of the topography of West Texas. Comprising two main parts, the dramatic opening serves to introduce the main theme, first stated by the horns. A second theme is presented and developed in the following energetic allegro section. Near the conclusion the first section theme returns in the brass along with contrapuntal material derived from the second allegro theme. The overture concludes in a frenzy of energy.
