Program Notes
LEX I: Corpus omne perseverare in statu suo quiescendi
vel movendi uniformiter in directum, nisi quatenus
a viribus impressis cogitur statum illum mutare.
-Sir Isaac Newton, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica
inertia is the first in a series for saxophone (or multiple saxophones) that take their names from the Newtonian Laws of Motion, the second being an alto saxophone solo entitled action/reaction. The name inertia is derived from the first of these laws which basically states that an object in motion will remain in motion unless an external and unbalanced force acts upon it.
