Program Notes
Farrar composed this march in 1896, the year he was employed to organize a state band in Indiana. Contrary to popular speech usage, the march did not refer to what was then Indiana State Teachers College and in now Indiana State University. Around the turn of the century (and later) there were numerous "official state bands," in including those in Connecticut, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesta, Montana and New York.
