Program Notes
This descriptive work celebrates the great dog sled race that begins each March in Anchorage, Alaska, testing the endurance of dog teams and drivers as they battle changing terrain and severe weather conditions. A swift opening section depicts the start of the race and lead changes between two rivals. The pace slows during a contrasting section signifying the arrival of nightfall that allows the teams a much-needed rest. The race resumes at daybreak and intensifies as the piece reaches a rousing conclusion as the winner crosses the finish line.
- Program Note from The Instrumentalist
Iditarod, The Great Sled Dog Race, is an excellent grade 2 piece that may be used for any occasion. It provides challenges for younger musicians yet retains the melodic and rhythmic material students and audiences will enjoy.
