Program Notes

Music composed for military purposes comprises another major field of music composition that possesses a very long history. Trumpet calls have been used to signal military maneuvers since the Renaissance, and music for parades, reviews and routine marching have long been needed by armies from around the world. In Haydn's era, the band of the time was called Harmonie, and it comprised pairs of oboes and/or clarinets, two horns and two bassoons. Additional instruments such as serpent (a bass range instrument you neither really want to see or hear) and trumpet might be added when Harmonie was being used for military purposes. Quite a number of composers were active in the field of Harmoniemusik, with one of the most notable being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Haydn was less active in the field, but did compose a handful of marches as a result of commissions.

The two marches Haydn wrote for the Derbyshire Regiment were composed as a result of a commission gained during his 1794 tour of England, while the Hungarian National March is among the last of his works, having been composed in 1802. While neither of these marches ranks among the best of Haydn's compositions, they still possess the charm and wit that are hallmarks of the great composer's style.
