Program Notes

Dr. Anne-Marie Cherry and I were still graduate students at UT-Austin when we first started talking about collaborating on a piece for solo horn. Backstage for yet another concert together, having just played one tune and waiting for our next one on the show, we hatched our initial plan to pass the time: 1) I wanted to showcase Anne-Marie's absurd ability to play; 2) we wanted the individual movements to also work as standalone pieces; 3) the tutti band parts would be interesting but not out of the realm of playability by the many talented high school bands out there; and 4) that it should be, above all else, just fun to play. And to think, it only took ten short years for the Horn Concerto to come to fruition!

An immeasurable thanks to my very dear friend, Dr. Cherry, for poking and prodding me with tri-annual, “How’s the horn concerto going?” over the years and making sure I didn’t just write a 15-minute homage to my favorite John Williams licks. And lastly, many thanks to Dr. Ryan Kelly and the UT Symphony Band for premiering the work!
