Program Notes

Holliday Festival Overture was composed for the Holliday High School Band (Holliday, Texas, Stan Mauldin and Mike Ary, Directors), for performance at the 2002 Midwest International Music Clinic. The overture does not fit into the standard overture form of “fast-slow-fast.” It opens with a moderately slow tempo that features the vibraphone with an ethereal upper woodwind chordal accompaniment and a punctuated ostinato in the low voices and timpani. After a fanfare, the tempo quickens with a driving low woodwind line and a marcato melody in the brass. The five-note brass theme, introduced by the trombones, develops via a complex set of harmonic combinations and chromatic accompaniment. This is followed by a brief reflective moment featuring oboe, trumpet and horn solos. The fast tempo returns with a rhythmic drive to the end.
