Program Notes

The Hodag! is a musical telling of the story of a brave lumberjack, a cow, about to become hamburger, and a mythological Northwoods monster. Our story begins with the hero, the happy lumberjack, going for a stroll through the woods. The lumberjack then proceeds to do what lumberjacks do best, to cut down trees. "Timber!" he shouts as the plot thickens...

A bored cow wanders in a nearby field oblivious to the fact that an evil creature with spikes sticking out of its thick hide is stalking it, coming ever nearer. At first the hapless cow is unaware. The Hodag creeps closer, and the cow is on its guard. Suddenly, the horrific monster appears and the cow lets out a terrified, "Moo!"

The Hodag begins chasing the cow, and the frantic sounds draw the attention of the happy lumberjack. He jumps between the cow and the monster, and the two engage in a titanic, percussive battle. The beast charges and bites down, our hero swings his mighty axe. The Hodag runs away, yelping like a dog. The cow is safe. Our hero is victorious! The cow and the happy lumberjack walk into the sunset. (Lumberjacks typically don't ride cows!)
