Program Notes

Although not as well-known as other Fillmore marches, His Excellency is truly one of his very best. Great melodies, unexpected harmonic twists, and fine writing for all instruments will make this a band favorite. Schissel has added his expertise to this score, clarifying articulations and dynamics to make this the standard edition.

- Program Note from publisher

This arrangement is dedicated to Harry Pfingsten, an extraordinary musician, educator and friend.

- Program Note from score

Although no one know who "his excellency" is, we can be sure that it served as a musical salute to some dignitary during the enormously popular Fillmore Band concerts at the Cincinnati Zoo. Harry Pfingsten, the retired band director of Avon Lake High School, to whom this arrangement is dedicated, was Tom Batiuk's inspiration for the world-famous cartoon, Funky Winkerbean, starring band director Harry L. Dinkle.

- Program Note from Kennesaw Mountain High School Wind Symphony concert program, 20 December 2006
