Program Notes

Hero was commissioned by the Florida Bandmasters Association in memory of Bobby Adams, DMA, who served as director of bands at Stetson University from 1987 until his retirement in 2012, and was inducted in 2005 as a member of both the FBA Hall of Fame and Roll of Distinction.

- Program Note from Stetson University

Defining the magic of achievement is contingent of an understanding of limitation ... Limitations are a major source of human disappointment, frustration, pain, and unhappiness ... life itself is a limitation -- we all die eventually...

To achieve at a high level under these conditions ... a man has what might be called ‘heroic capacity’ that allows for the elevation of ... capabilities far beyond normal levels ... ’to go where no man has gone before’ is the underlying spirit of all great achievements ... made possible because of humankind’s capacity to engage the heroic at will ...

Magic is the triumph over limitation, real or imagined. Magic occurs when the resistance of a limitation that seemingly will not yield, falls to the force of heroic effort ... magic is spirit, will, strength, intelligence, skill, and knowledge focused on the overcoming of limitation. Magic is the sure signal that a barrier has been broken ... the ‘sonic-boom’ of human experience...”

The limitations people face from the cradle to the grave become easier to face when life is enhanced with magical moments.

- Program Note by Bobby Adams from Music, Magic, and Heroes, from the Thirtieth Annual Florida Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame Concert, 18 November 2019
