Biography

Hermes Camacho (b. Davis, Calif.) is an American composer, conductor, and educator currently based out of Austin, Texas.

Dr. Camacho earned degrees in music, studying composition, conducting, and violin/viola from Cal State Long Beach (B.M.), the University of Colorado (M.M.), and The University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A.).

His music has garnered awards and recognition from the National Endowment of the Arts, Meet the Composer, Vermont Arts Council, ASCAP, SCI, and the American Composers Forum, among others and has been performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia. As a conductor, Dr. Camacho has led the premieres of numerous works as well as hundreds of performances of both contemporary music and the standard repertoire. In 2013, he led a performance for a delegation of 45 ambassadors to the United Nations. Every summer, he serves as conductor and chamber coach with the Sacramento Youth Symphony Chamber Music Workshop.

Dr. Camacho is currently the program manager for Austin Soundwaves, an El Sistema-inspired non-profit music program serving the greater central Texas area. He is also an adjunct in theory/composition at the University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio) and co-founder of Picardy, an online education platform for music theory and musicianship. He serves on the boards of El Sistema USA, Austin Youth Orchestra, and KMFA Classical FM 89.5.
