Program Notes

Heat is scored for nine percussionists, though the entire ensemble is broken into smaller groups. These groups — a marimba quartet, percussion quartet, and a vibraphone soloist — all have moments in the piece where they are highlighted. It isn’t until the end that all of the members of the ensemble combine with a full sound. This allows for unique textures and timbres to be explored that otherwise might be buried by the rest of the ensemble. Heat also incorporates stylistic influences from jazz and funk.
