Program Notes
This very playable march was written in 1920 under the pseudonym Harold Bennett, and later published in No. 3 of the famous Bennett Band Books. These little books were the delight of millions of fledgling musicians and their teachers, and were Fillmore's gift to American music education! This arrangement is a tribute to Fillmore, and to Dr. Nicholas Contorno, who passed away in 2014.
-Program Note from publisher
Henry Fillmore was known throughout Florida as “Uncle Henry” and was instrumental in the development of band programs in the state. He was a prolific composer and arranger of music for wind band. Paul Bierley (noted Sousa and Fillmore scholar) documents 256 original compositions in the Fillmore catalog. Uncle Henry’s free spirit and love of “fun music” is evident in the majority of these works, particularly in his marches. Henry Fillmore wrote Headway March in 1920, under the pseudonym Harold Bennett, and it was later published in No. 3 of the famous Bennett Band Books. This march features standard march form and characteristic 6/8 rhythms, multiple endings, dynamic contrasts, and chromatics in the sound and style of college fight songs so prevalent at the time it was written.
