Program Notes

Jennifer Lawrence's hit single, as heard in The Hunger Games, has been expertly arranged here for bands with flexible instrumentation. The power and emotion of the music really comes through in this arrangement.

- Program Note from publisher

The Hanging Tree is a song by American composer James Newton Howard featuring vocals from American actress Jennifer Lawrence. It was written by Suzanne Collins and composed by Howard, Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz from the band The Lumineers. The song was the second single from the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 (2014). It is a folk ballad that features orchestral strings and a choir, elements of Appalachian music, and its subject as a murder ballad.

In The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the song is revealed to have been (fictionally) composed by Lucy Gray Baird, the first Hunger Games victor from District 12. It refers to the hanging of a rebel who killed three people in a bombing attack on the coalmines, and the use of the site of the hanging as a meeting place by Lucy Gray and her former lover, Billy Taupe. The hangings were conducted from a tree because District 12 had not been provided with a proper gallows at the time. The lead protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) performs the song in the film, which is also heard over the closing credits.
