Program Notes

Hallowed Grounds was inspired by my two assignments to The United States Army Band “Pershing's Own,” Fort Myer, Virginia. Located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, I treasure the ceremonies I conducted hosted by presidents of the United States, honored foreign dignitaries, and laid veterans to rest. Each movement of this suite seeks to convey the spirit of Arlington and two other national cemeteries significant to me.

1. Veteran and Wilshire are two of several busy streets that border the Los Angeles National Cemetery, with a monument to veterans of the Spanish American War on this corner. The movement opens with sounds of the busy streets before yielding to the quiet dignity and solemnity of the cemetery grounds. The gradual return of the sounds of the outside world bring this movement to a close.

2. Garrison Forest Located northwest of the City of Baltimore, Garrison Forest is as rural as the Los Angeles National Cemetery is urban. Therefore, the music places the listener on a walk through the countryside, while never forgetting the legacy of service and sacrifice on display in this beautiful setting.

3. Arlington. Without a doubt, Arlington National Cemetery is the most iconic of our national cemeteries. Using the tune Arlington Walk as the foundation, melodies from different eras emphasize the role the cemetery plays in the Nation's past. The presence of the drum cadence reflects our inexorable march into the future. Dwayne Milburn
