Program Notes
Guiding Light was commissioned by Brian Downey, Las Vegas Academy director of bands, for their 2019 Contemporary Voices concert at the Smith Center in Reynolds Hall, featuring their top wind ensemble with their joint choir of over 140 voices. It was an honor to write a piece like this for my alma mater (go grad. class of 2011!).
Guiding Light was written for the Las Vegas Academy high school graduates who would soon be embarking on a new journey. Sometimes the next step is hard to make, be it the one after graduating, a big move, or starting a new job. This piece carries the message that all one must do is trust. Trust in oneself, trust in the future, and trust that everything will work out in the end. To all those graduates, as well as future graduates, I wish you the best. Trust in your own path.
