Program Notes
Paul Yoder (1908-1990), one of America’s most awarded and prolific composers, also has the unique career distinction of having served as President of the American Bandmasters Association and founding President of the Japan Band Directors Association. In the 1950s, while researching the unlikely flow of royalty checks from postwar Japan, Yoder met many band directors interested in performing Western music. Thus began his legendary involvement with music education and the formative symphonic band movement in Japan, culminating in his promotion of Japanese band appearances at Midwest Clinic, and being dubbed by contemporary Alfred Reed as “America’s musical ambassador.”
The Glass Slipper, a descriptive Cinderella story, was a standard at Japanese school band festivals in the fifties. This work is performed today in honor of Paul Yoder’s significant contributions to the development of concert bands and band education in Japan as well as the entire world.
