Program Notes

Using many effects to recreate the events at the Battle of Gettysburg, this piece is perfect for discussing historical perspective. A slow, mysterious opening leads into a depiction of the battle. A short, aleatoric section simulates a huge cannon bombardment with drums and whistling. Skillful writing, historical significance and audience appeal all come together in this wonderful composition for young bands. Contemporary techniques create a dramatic battle scene that includes the sound of the fife and drum, as well battlefield effects, all within the grasp of bands at the very easy level.
