Program Notes

Commissioned by the Gemeinhardt Company in celebration of the company's fifty years of building flutes, this three-movement work adds an important new offering to the instrument's repertoire. The second movement features the solo voice performing on alto flute and C flute surrounded by exotic, fascinating percussion sounds, all accompanied by a flute choir. The first and third movements feature the soloist with the usual concert band instrumentation in accompaniment.

- Program Note from publisher

The piece is considered a staple in flute repertory, though it has been overshadowed by some of Smith’s other, more versatile works – as well as other older, and famous works from other composers. This composition is a contemporary concerto, one of two that Smith wrote, the other being the Willson Suite, for the euphonium.

The entire suite is devoted to the flute family. It is divided into three movements: Carousel, Telling Stories to the Sea, and Ceremony of Flute and Drum.
