Biography

Gavin Fraser is a Canadian composer and bass/baritone.

Mr. Fraser completed his Bachelor of Music (Hons.) in voice performance and composition at Memorial University of Newfoundland, under the tutelage of Dr. Jane Leibel (voice) and Dr. Andrew Staniland (composition). Fraser is currently studying with composer John Rea at McGill for his Master of Music degree, and is the resident composer of the McGill Wind Orchestra.

Fraser works double duty as a composer and bass-baritone soloist, and he often combines these skills to provide a unique perspective on new music.

Fraser’s list of compositions includes choral and chamber music, electroacoustic pieces, music for chamber orchestra, and multiple films scores. His most recent works include UMAGNOLIA (string quartet no. 1, 2017), and music for the award winning films Ransom (2016) and Underneath the Makeup, There's Me (2016), directed by Chris Fudge. As a filmmaker himself, Fraser has scored and premiered two short films in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Fraser performed live vocals and electronics at the premiere of his latest film, Spirals (2015).

Recent premieres include the performance of his cello and piano suite, Untether Me (2015) at Bargemusic's Here and Now Festival (January 4-6th 2017).

Fraser also works and performs regularly as a choral singer. He will join the National Youth Choir of Canada as a bass singer and soloist in Summer 2017 for a third tour with this prestigious group.
