Program Notes

The composer explained at the premiere performance that he had considered Jacques Press's Wedding Dance from "Hasseneh" for the combined performance of the Clovis North High School (Calif.) Symphonic Band and his own Fresno State University (Calif.) Wind Orchestra, but rejected it because of the rehearsal time that would be required. He then decided to program the Shostakovich Galop from "Cheryomushki" but was unable to quickly acquire the music. So he decided to write his own galop. It was premiered on October 2, 2014, at California State University, Fresno, with the combined bands encompassing some 170 musicians.

- Program Note by Dave Strickler

Galop is a fast and furious work that is meant to serve as an appropriate selection to conclude concerts in a fun and light-hearted manner. While this composition sounds impressive and quite demanding, appropriate ranges and wise orchestration makes it quite playable at a fast tempo. As with most Gilroy compositions, the percussion plays an important role. A galloping rhythm is first introduced as a solo woodblock and before long, the crack of the whip (large slap stick at the start of measure ten) helps to conclude the introductory material and move the composition towards its first theme.

- Program Note by Nancy Moser for the Joaquin Miller Middle School Advanced Band
