Program Notes

Written in a classic Latin American style, this piece opens with sizzling fanfare that will grab everyone's attention. After the red-hot beginning, the action settles into an exciting groove that heats up and simmers throughout the ensemble. A fiery and rousing ending completes this showstopper that's approachable by a wide range of bands.

- Program Note by publisher

Dedicated to the 2016 Howard County Gifted and Talented Band (Columbia, Maryland), Fuego Español is a Latin-inspired showstopper for mature concert bands. Blending classical Latin-American styles and exciting contemporary Latin-inspired dance rhythms, this invigorating piece features every section of the band.

The piece has three distinct sections. The first is a typical Spanish fanfare that quickly develops into a fiery Latin montuno groove based upon the 3-2 clave. The second section introduces the piece's motive and weaves through a variety of moods and emotions. The concluding section is an extremely exciting and fast motuno groove introduced first in the woodwinds and the mallet instruments. The piece reaches a fervent apex and suddenly begins an intense build to a fiery conclusion.
