Program Notes

Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming is the basis of this compositional setting. Although a well-known carol mostly heard in choral arrangements, the mysterious opening obligato is set long before the beautiful but haunting melody is finally heard. The woodwind and brass choirs are pitted against each other in an unusual harmonic fashion in the middle section before a return to a variation of the opening setting and final fade away.
