Program Notes

The wind band version of Set 1 was premiered by James Croft and the Florida State University Wind Orchestra in 1986. Like Grainger, Stanhope uses British folk songs for personal expression and canonic development. The movements are (1) Good Morning, Good Morning, My Pretty Little Miss, a fast-moving passacaglia; (2) Lovely Joan, also used by Vaughan Williams in Fantasia on Greensleeves and here used in multiple canons; (3) The Blacksmith, a vigorous portrait of the man at work; and (4) Irish Tune, depicting a nostalgic seascape changing into crashing waves.
