Program Notes

Flight is composed in three distinct sections: Misty Morning, Fond Memories and Flight! Misty Morning evokes an early morning arrival at the airport and the quiet feeling one might have in anticipation of taking off on a private plane. Fond Memories musically represents the recollection of pst vacations and visits to far off lands. Flight!, complete with takeoff, brings the soaring exhilaration of the flight itself.

While the three sections vary, there are many common links between them. The opening notes in the flute establish a three-note motive that appears throughout the rest of the work. The lyrical melody that is the primary focus of the second section is derived from the harmonic suggestion of the first. The third section takes the three-note motive from the first and uses it to accomplish takeoff, leading to the most exciting and rhythmic percussion portion of the work, with the suggestions of whirling propellers and roaring engines.

In loving memory of John Barney for the Lansing High School Band, Lansing, New York.
