Program Notes
Flash!: A Fanfare for Brass and Percussion is a three-minute work in modified ternary form. It explores changing meters, quartal and quintal sonorities, syncopation, and ostinato development. The opening utilizes the hexatonic scale through the use of a pyramid/inverted pyramid effect. The B section presents a lyrical, disjunct theme in the horns, yet the rhythmic drive persists underneath. The work proceeds with non-stop energy requiring clean articulations and rhythmic integrity. Tessiturae and technique are generally accessible in the work, and challenges include ensemble precision, rhythmic accuracy, and lyrical playing of disjunct melodic material.
