Program Notes

This interesting new work is the third selection in a series of elements-inspired works that includes Windscape and Earthscape. This work has three contrasting sections. The opening, subtitled Hephaestus — God of Fire is marked con brio. Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire and of forges and was blacksmith for the gods. The sound of his anvil can be clearly heard in this section. The reflective and more transparently scored middle section, marked "Smoothly, but not slowly," highlights solos for flute, trumpet, and trombone. The intense concluding section, Wildfire, begins with a percussion soli that develops through a layering approach into a rousing finale. - Program Note from The Instrumentalist and publisher
