Program Notes

Inspired by the 1888 eruption of Mt. Bandai in northern Japan, this interesting work conveys the drama and volcanic fury of a pyroclastic flow. A mysterious opening section with full ensemble hits and driving percussion introduces an ominous trumpet melody accompanied by repeated, intense rhythmic figures. A flowing, contrasting section with majestic melodic lines leads to a restatement of earlier material that builds to a final passage that brings the work to a powerful conclusion.
