Program Notes

Figures Sonores was written in 1984 at the request of the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. It was used as a test piece in the concert division at the 1985 contest. The board of the World Music Conference asked Badings to write a new type of test piece that stressed the musical contents and its delivery rather than technical difficulties. In addition, the work was not to exceed a duration of ten minutes. This time limit really disturbed composer Badings, as he felt he could not really develop his musical ideas completely.

The three parts are played without pause. A lyrical, pathetical first part is followed by a solemn middle section in which the percussion has the dominant role. A virtuoso and whimsical finale ends the piece.
