Program Notes

In January of 2018 I learned of plans for my church, Eastpointe Christian Church in Blacklick, Ohio, to go on a missions trip to Haiti to help the people of that country in various ways. My wife and I discussed the possibility of joining them, but having five young children precluded us from being able to do so. I continued to think about a possible way I could help them, and one day in January, God placed it on my heart to use the gift of music composition to aid in raising funds for the trip. I then located a beautiful Haitian folk melody that I thought would make a wonderful base for the composition. Since I wanted young children in their first years of instrumental music, as well as older musicians, to both be able to enjoy the work, I have written it in a way that is upbeat, fun, and relays the joy of being able to play music together, specifically the joy of helping support this wonderful cause by allowing the creation of music that can be shared. I hope that each person who plays this will think of all peoples around the world and our ability to use whatever gifts that we are given to help others.

Feuilles-Oh! or "Fey-O," is a Haitian folk song about a woman pleading for God to save her young child's life. The melody was made popular by Simon and Garfunkel on their album Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970. I found the tune being sung in various different ways by Haitian singers and felt that it has a nice contour and is enjoyable both slowly as well as up-beat and syncopated, thus making it a wonderful choice for this short work. I felt the subject of the song was fitting as the basis of the work because of the nature of the mission to which the supporters of the work were making their donations: missions to help the children and people of Haiti.

The work is meant to be upbeat and fun. Please feel free to take many liberties with the percussion and make each performance that which is new, and exciting for the performers.
