Program Notes

Festive Fugue is an upbeat, rhythmic, energetic piece written in the form of a fugue, where a recognizable theme is imitated and traded around instruments and instrument families in different keys. The piece starts with a short introduction before launching the first appearance of the staccato theme, and features contrasting episodes based on a more sumptuous motive. With sections alternating between the two, the piece reaches a climax on a minor-mode version of the main theme, before resuming the active rhythm to drive to the end.

This work was written for Ars Nova Dallas.
