Program Notes

Of course, it is possible for music to address something, to make an accusation, or to invite people to deep contemplation, but sometimes this can be somewhat exhausting. I had been thinking that I wanted to write a piece that could simply be enjoyed by everyone present, both the performers and the audience. I was fortunate enough to receive a commission from the Sendai Symphonic Band, a community band in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, in 1998, and this piece was the realization of my desire.

This three-movement suite is a realization of the three images associated with the word "festival": parade, ceremony, and fiesta. I won't give any further explanation of this piece. There is no better place for a band than a festival, so anyone can easily and freely imagine the scene. The composer would be happy if you enjoy listening to and playing this piece in a festive mood.
