Program Notes

Fantasy on English Folkongs incorporates three melodies from Cecil Sharp's One Hundred English Folksongs (1916), all three collected in Somerset County. This is the same collection that Ralph Vaughan Williams used as a source for his English Folk Song Suite of 1924, although he did not set any of these tunes.

The first tune introduced, which is the core o the work, is the haunting sea ballad Farewell, Nancy. The Sign of the Bonny Blue, a jaunty country dance tune, follows, then a reprise of the opening melody which leads to Lady Maisry which, like the previous melodies, in in Aeolian mode.
