Program Notes

The Fantasia and Rondo by Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) is originally the second and fourth movements from Weber's Clarinet Quintet in B-flat Major, Op. 134 (J.182). The Clarinet Quintet was written in 1811-1815 for string quartet and the Munich clarinetist Heinrich Barmann, who had served as a Preussian army bandsman at Potsdam before joining the Munich orchestra, where earlier Mannheim traditions were sustained. The Rondo movement especially displays Mannheim penchants for brilliant "rockets," a classical elegance, and the full-fledged drama of Weber's Romantic operatic style.
