Program Notes

Fantasía, Op.14 is a symphonic piece composed by Javier Pérez Garrido in 2005 for a big symphonic concert band. It is mainly influenced by American style music and orchestration.

In the first section the heroic and enthusiastic main theme is played in a brisk and lively tempo called Allegro con spirito. After its development, an important transition leads to the romantic second theme, played in a slow and expressive tempo.

In this second section, most of the instruments play as soloists -even the harp and the celesta-. The importance of chamber orchestration in the Largo con Espressione is evident and its development is made by a Lied divided into several secondary sections.

Finally, a new transition in Allegro con spirito prepares us to listen to the main theme again, this time with important changes. This third and last section also includes a brilliant coda which builds to a final apotheosis.

The performance of this piece was mandatory for all the bands taking part in the First Section of the National Competition for Concert Bands “Ciudad de Murcia”, Spain, 2010.
