Program Notes

This work was commissioned by Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in connection with it 100th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the band program at this institution. It was first performed there on April 12, 2003, by the Baylor University Wind Ensemble under the direction of the composer.

A single movement piece in two contrasting sections, Exhortation and Praise! is an attempt to portray musically the deep feeling aroused by two of the fundamental aspects of a religion among its adherents: the exhortation to purify and attain the highest perfection possible of one's soul, and praise as a joyful outpouring of love and thanks to the Almighty for His blessings.

All of the tonal colors of the modern, integrated wind orchestra are called upon, singly and in various combinations, in the development of the three main themes uniting these two movements into a single unified texture ending in a blaze of adoration and glory.
