Program Notes

Ron Howard's 1992 film Far and Away starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in a saga of Irish immigration to American in the 1890s. Drawing on the rich tradition of Irish music as inspiration, John Williams uses original themes, but in an Irish style, in creating a sweeping film score that beautifully captures and enhances the moods portrayed in the film.

- Program Note from publisher

Williams made his early reputation in film scores with music from the 1969 Steve McQueen film The Reivers and the 1972 John Wayne film The Cowboys. Both captured the romance, adventure and sweeping vistas of the American landscape. Williams returned to that vast landscape with the 1992 epic Far and Away, director Ron Howard's tribute to the Irish immigrants who helped settle the American frontier during the end of the nineteenth century. Williams drew on Irish folk tunes for some of his inspiration. Careful listeners may hear an echo of Far and Away in Williams's later score for JFK -- a film about the first Irish-American president.
