Program Notes
Evocation was composed collaboratively with the 2018/2019 students of the South High School (Minneapolis, Minn.) Wind Ensemble. This particular ensemble comprises the most advanced wind players at South; therefore I was encouraged to experiment with extended techniques, contemporary environments, and stepping out of the box.
With that in mind, I had the students improvise based on emotions and other elements. The students and I discussed which foundational words worked best, and which words needed additions or tweaking. We discussed what musical elements work well with the chosen words, and how to maximize the musical interpretations or evocations of each part.
Big thanks to Mr. Eric Sayre, the students of the South High School Symphonic Band, the McKnight Foundation, and the American Composers Forum for being part of the creation and realization of this work.

Performance Notes
While this piece was composed specifically for a wind ensemble, Evocation is an open ensemble piece that could work well for ensembles of any size. It is a skeleton, so many interpretations and liberties can be taken with this piece. While the work is easier to perform with a conductor controlling entrances, exits, dynamics, and other logistics, this piece can be easily pre-realized and performed without a conductor. Additionally, the parts of this piece are not to be returned to after they are finished; it is a linear piece. Above all, have big fun!
