Biography

Ethan Cypress (b. 1993, Cooperstown, N.Y.) is an American composer and trombonist.

While growing up, Mr. Cypress played in numerous string chamber groups and orchestras as a violinist and violist before finding a more comfortable niche as a trombonist. He graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 2015 with a Bachelor of Music degree in classical trombone performance. He just started (2018) his masters degree in jazz studies at the University of Rochester after taking a couple years off from school.

While music composition has never been his primary focus, Ethan has been a semi-finalist, finalist, and honorable mention for the American Prize in chamber music and wind band composition, the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards, and the Morton Gould Young Composer Awards.

Ethan also freelances as a music copyist and recording engineer. He currently holds the position of on call copyist for the Glimmerglass Opera Festival in Cooperstown, N.Y. And before returning to school in the fall of 2017, he held the positions of adjunct professor of music technology and academic intern at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.
