Program Notes
About this piece, the composer writes:
Equilibrium walks a musical tight-rope in an effort to achieve a musical equilibrium. Using the center of the octave, the tri-tone, as a melodic and harmonic balance point, Equilibrium contrasts often opposing rhythmic and harmonic elements to achieve, or often disrupt, a musically “balanced” state. A secondary definition of equilibrium, referring to a calm, peaceful mental state, is represented by a more tranquil, minimalist center section of the work. Numerous rhythmic permutations, an active interplay between the winds and percussion and a relentless, driving pulse all contribute toward attaining a sense of musical equilibrium.
- Program Note by Andrew Skaggs for the U.S. Navy Band
Equilibrium was commissioned by the United States Navy Band of Washington, DC, and their conductor/commander, Captain Brian Walden.
