Program Notes

Enchanted Night was commissioned by the Hanover Wind Symphony (New Jersey, Peter T. Boor, Founding Director) in celebration of this fine ensemble’s 19th concert season and is based on the novella of the same title by Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Steven Millhauser. The piece is conceived as a tone poem and is intended to reflect some of the varied events which unfold in Millhauser’s fantasy of what happens in a small Connecticut town after midnight under a nearly full moon. The author’s words, excerpted from the beginning of the book, served as inspiration for this composition:

This is the night of revelation. This is the night the dolls wake.
This is the night of the dreamer in the attic. This is the night of the piper in the woods.

The composer expresses his sincere gratitude to Steven Millhauser for his encouragement, kindness and patience.
