Program Notes
The fourth movement of Aragon 1945-1952 was inspired by the hit show tune from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific. Many consider it the duo's most popular song, and numerous popular singers have recorded it, including Perry Como, whose version reached #1 in 1949, and Frank Sinatra, who recorded the song several times throughout his career.
Scored as a flowing ballad, the piece effectively conveys the emotion and romantic spirit of the Rodgers and Hammerstein creation with lyrical melodic lines, lush harmonies, solos for alto saxophone and horn, an effective key change, and a quiet, delicate ending.
