Program Notes

Elements is intended to be an exploration of raw forces, both in the classical conception of the physical elements, and in the elements of music. Each movement emphasizes changes in one element of music as the delineator of form while downplaying the others. In the first movement, Earth, harmony plays the primary role. In Water, changes in instrumental timbre provide the primary interest. In Air, a single melody passes through several textures, and in Fire, the interplay of cross-rhythms drive the work to its conclusion.
